The team at Specsavers Godalming in the High Street are celebrating the news that one of their customers has been crowned as a regional finalist in Spectacle Wearer of the Year 2019, the annual contest which is held in aid of anti-bullying charity Kidscape.
Sheila Cakebread, who lives in Godalming, was chosen in the 60+ age category and won a certificate, a Specsavers voucher worth £129 and a bottle of champagne. She will now go through to the next round of judging which could see her become the overall Spectacle Wearer of the Year 2019 and win £10,000.
Delighted regional finalist
And it was thanks to the team that Sheila entered the competition in the first place. Optical assistant Esta Kissin was so impressed with Sheila’s sense of style when she fitted her MARC JACOBS glasses she suggested she uploaded a selfie - and the rest is history.
Sheila said: ‘I still cannot believe that I have got this far, and it took a while for the news to sink in. It is an amazing confidence boost and came just at the right time when I needed some good news. I had seen the MARC JACOBS glasses in a magazine and knew that I simply had to have them. It then seemed, wherever I turned, I saw the glasses – on an advert somewhere, in another magazine. Fate was telling me something!’
A word from the store director
Mark Dunn, store director in Godalming, said: ‘It is an amazing achievement to get to this stage and a real honour for us here at the Godalming store to have one of our customers go through.
‘We are now standing by for that phone call to say she is off to the celeb-packed final that takes place in London in October, and are all keeping our fingers crossed.’
