Over the past few months, Trongate has been working with the National Autistic Society to become Scotland’s first autism-friendly optician.

Understanding autism

Staff in store received the Autism Friendly Award by learning about the condition and making small adjustments to the way they work.

The introduction of quiet zones on a Tuesday and Friday where there will be no music or television played from 09:30am until 11.00am - and staff attendance at an autism awareness talk from the National Autistic Society - has led to the prestigious accolade being awarded to the store.

Two new dedicated areas within Trongate – one on the retail floor and one in the contact lenses department – offers patients with autistic needs a little more privacy at any time of the day.

Significant achievement

This is only the second time the Autism Friendly Award has been granted in Scotland – the first was to Scottish Parliament last year.

Jenny Paterson, director of The National Autistic Society Scotland, said: ‘I would like to congratulate Specsavers on becoming Scotland’s first autism-friendly optician.

‘The team at the Glasgow store has worked really hard to learn about autism and understand why eye tests could be stressful for someone with the condition.’

As part of the Autism Friendly Award, staff at Specsavers created a pamphlet which explains what happens during an eye test. This can be found on the website under Eye Health.

A better environment for customers with Autism

David Quigley, store director for Specsavers Trongate, said: ‘We are proud and honoured to be recognised as Scotland’s first autism-friendly optician. ‘Learning about autism and the small adjustments that can be made in-store to help support a person with autism has been truly insightful.

‘The care of our customers is at the centre of everything we do here at Trongate and we are delighted to have created a better environment for customers with autism.’ To get in touch re a pre-visit or if you have any questions, please contact the below:
