Generous staff and customers at a Barrow opticians have helped to spread festive cheer by making a sizeable donation to help the town’s homeless population.
A team from Specsavers on Dalton Road was able to hand over a cheque for £546 to the Barrow in Furness homeless shelter, thanks to a £500 donation from the store’s directors, topped up by a customer collection.
Essential services for the homeless
The shelter, on Bath Street in Barrow, provides a range of essential services for the homeless, such as showers, laundry, lunch, supported accommodation and referrals to specialist support agencies.
Specsavers’ £500 donation will fund Christmas dinner with all the trimmings while the customer collection will provide gifts for those who need to use the shelter on Christmas Day and over the festive period.
Extra support at Christmas
Andrea Wood, store manager at Specsavers in Barrow, said: ‘We make a donation to the homeless shelter every Christmas as a way to help those in our local community who need that extra bit of support at this time of year.
‘Our kind-hearted staff and customers have pulled together to raise a fantastic amount this year and we’re glad that the money will go towards making someone’s Christmas that little more special.’
