Specsavers in South Shields is going the extra mile to provide essential and urgent services to those in need during the coronavirus pandemic.

The store at The Beacon Centre is delivering glasses, contact lenses and hearing aids to people across the region in a bid to support the community during a time of uncertainty and isolation. 

Specsavers stores, in line with government guidelines, have suspended routine testing for the foreseeable future but urgent and essential eye care is still available to those in need – including NHS frontline staff and key workers.

Key workers

Over the last week, staff have advised countless NHS key workers who have needed urgent guidance on their eye healthcare.

Staff at the store have also voluntarily hand delivered glasses within the local community and posted any prescriptions outwith the South Shields area to customers ensuring they do not need to come into store at all.

Store director, Bryan Clark, said: 'In light of the current climate we are doing our utmost to ensure we can still be on hand for those in our local community who may need advice or a consultation, as well as valued key workers who are on the frontline.

'I would like to assure all of our customers, or indeed those whose regular opticians is closed, that we are here to help in the case of urgent eye care requirements. So if your condition is causing you distress, or preventing you from functioning as you normally would without our help, please call the store in the first instance and we will do all we can while adhering with current health and safety rules.'

Essential eye care

Specsavers' teams are classed as key workers to provide urgent and essential eye care to those who need it. This includes supporting other key workers who couldn’t function without help and people who would come to harm without our health expertise, especially where the usual hospital services and NHS facilities are being prioritised for the fight against COVID-19.

The store is available to give advice between the hours: Monday to Thursday 8.30am to 5.30pm, Friday 8.30am to 7pm, Saturday 8.30am to 5pm and Sunday 10am to 4pm.
