Specsavers Stanley’s essential and urgent services have already proven invaluable for several key workers and frontline staff during the pandemic.

The opticians, located at Cromarty House on Front Street, has suspended routine testing in line with government guidelines but is open for those in need of urgent or essential eye care – including key workers and NHS frontline staff.

Since lockdown, staff at the store were on hand to advise and treat key workers including a nurse who wears varifocal lenses but was finding it uncomfortable whilst wearing a face mask during work. The store was able to change her glasses almost immediately so she could continue to work without discomfort.

The store has also helped an ambulance driver who was in need of assistance as well as ensuring a young child was tested and given a new prescription and pair of glasses to allow him to continue doing school work at home.

The store is open six days a week in order to assist not only key workers but also members of the community who are in need of eye health during the lockdown.

A word from the store director

Store director, Ross McLachlan, said: 'We are closed for business such as routine testing but remain open for care to ease the burden on GP’s and hospitals and to take as much as pressure off of frontline staff as possible.

'I am glad that we are able to play our part and ensure key workers who need our help in order to continue working are able to get in touch.

'They should know that we will do our utmost to help them as we cannot thank them enough for their valuable work during this pandemic, and we are also here for the wider public in the case of eye care emergencies.'

Key workers

Specsavers' teams are classed as key workers to provide urgent and essential eye care to those who need it. This includes supporting other key workers who couldn’t function without help and people who would come to harm without health expertise, especially where the usual hospital services and NHS facilities are being prioritised for the fight against COVID-19.

Specsavers has launched a free nationwide sight and hearing consultation service offering access to vital advice and care from optometrists and audiologists, via video and telephone link. The new service is open to everyone and is developed in line with NHS recommendations on remote consultations.

Anyone who needs advice or consultation should phone the store to speak to a member of staff in the first instance. Please contact Specsavers Stanley on 01207 262 728. Opening hours are Monday to Friday 9am - 5.30pm and Saturday 8.45am - 5.00pm.
