Specsavers in Ely are advising people on the benefits of the digital retinal camera, a photographic tool which is used to create an image of the interior surface of the eye, including the retina, the optic disc, macula and posterior pole.

High magnifying lens

The camera is a specialized low power microscope with an attached camera. A test can take as little as 30 seconds and can detect signs of various health conditions including diabetes, high blood pressure, glaucoma and even life-threatening tumours.

Best technology

Specsavers Ely, store director, Minal Patel said: ‘The retinal camera is a very important tool and allows us to identify health conditions that may otherwise go unnoticed. We are determined to provide our customers with the best technology when we’re examining their eye sight and the camera allows us to do that.’

Free

Digital retinal photography checks checks are free of charge and are available to people over the age of 20. The service is provided by the store as part of a full eye examination.
