Eddie The Eagle swoops in to help open the store
Ski jumping legend Eddie ‘The Eagle’ Edwards was the very first customer as Specsavers Cheltenham North opened its doors.
Iconic sporting star
The Cheltenham-born Winter Olympian, who now lives just outside Stroud, had a sight test and help choosing some brand new specs at the new store. He was welcomed by store directors Melanie Brackstone and Terry Weldon, who also run the Specsavers store in the town centre, before optometrist Terry carried out the sight test.
A Specsavers customer of some 30 years, Eddie was also the star of the opticians’ first national TV commercial and has featured in several promotions since.
‘We’re delighted that Eddie was our first customer,’ said Melanie. ‘The new store is looking great and what better way to launch than with a visit from such an icon of the sporting world, and a local one at that.’
The store benefits from two testing rooms, a contact lens area, the very latest pre-screening and eye testing equipment and a range of 900 glasses on display. Digital Precision Eyecare is also available to help customers select their preferred glasses. Imaging software on a tablet is used to take an image of the customer wearing the glasses, which in turn captures a range of essential dispensing measurements.
‘We are ideally located out of town for those who might find it more difficult to get into Cheltenham itself, with the added benefit of free parking right outside. We’ve created six new jobs and the team all have previous experience of working in a Specsavers store. We also offer hearing test appointments six days a week in our bespoke audiology testing room which includes a sound proof booth.’
The store is open 9am until 6pm Monday to Friday, 9am to 5.30pm on Saturday and 10am until 4pm on Sunday.
