A Dunfermline hairdresser has been chosen from thousands of proud glasses wearers as a finalist for Specsavers’ Spectacle Wearer of the Year.

Charles Douglas Barr, aged 59, could follow in the footsteps of last year’s Award winner Shane Haron, and take home £10,000 and have the chance to mingle with the stars at the annual Spectacle Wearer of the Year Awards.

Glasses wearers across the UK and Republic of Ireland have been showing off their specs style by sharing their selfies online throughout the spring and summer.

Charles – who works at Sheds Hairdressing in Guildhall Street – was invited to visit the Specsavers store in High Street to receive a bottle of champagne, a certificate, and a £150 glasses voucher.

He said: ‘I wear my glasses all the time and like to be stylish, so my glasses have to be as well.

‘I first got glasses straight after school and they’re now an integral part of me. They’re the first thing I put on in the morning and they’re a bit of a fashion thing too.

‘I like to take time on glasses rather than picking something that’s just functional. Some people shy away from glasses – I think they should be out there.

‘People spend a lot of money on their appearance, so why not glasses?’

A word from the store director

Store Director at Specsavers Dunfermline, Grace Hepburn, said: ‘We are thrilled that Charles is a semi-finalist – he’s a great character and it would be a brilliant achievement to get to the next stage. We wish him all the best.’

The awards were launched by Strictly Come Dancing star and TV personality Oti Mabuse earlier this year. If Charles triumphs in his category, he will meet Oti and rub shoulders with many other celebs at the glitzy awards ceremony at London’s 8 Northumberland Avenue in October.

There are eight categories including a social media winner voted for by the public. All category winners will win a VIP makeover, with one overall winner taking home the ultimate accolade in specs wearing.
