Summer is here, which can only mean more sunshine, but it’s important not to overlook eye protection.
Specsavers in Queensway and the Edgware Road store are reminding all residents to safeguard their sight against the sun and to remember that not all sunglasses offer adequate protection.
Store director Said Aghabozorg says: ‘A huge amount of people aren’t aware of the real dangers caused by too much exposure to UV rays and the impact it has on the health of our eyes.
‘Excessive exposure to UV rays causes a painful irritation to the cornea at the front of the eye and, in extreme circumstances, this can lead to cancer of the cornea, age-related macular degeneration, cataracts and even blindness.’
Prevention is key
To protect your eyes from the sun, invest in sunglasses that bear the CE kite mark and offer 99-100 per cent UV protection, which is indicated on labelling with the mark UV-400. It’s also worth remembering that darkness, tint and even price do not indicate the strength of protection offered. So to be safe, always check the label or pop in store for further advice.
