Specsavers in Aberdare has donated £500 to the Aberdare Referees Society for branded tracksuits, training kits and polo shirts. The referees will wear them to and from games, and occasionally on the pitch itself.

Top flight football

The Aberdare Referees Society promotes local and national refereeing at every level, with training and guest talks from visiting professional referees.

The Society’s referees are involved in top-flight football, including Welsh Premier League matches and competitive games all over Europe. Its members have a wide range of ages and experience, from local under-12 league match officials to the referees representing Wales in the EURO 2016 qualifiers.

Kick start sponsorship

Neil Robinson, director of Specsavers in Aberdare, said: ‘The Aberdare Referees Society produces officials from grassroots football to the Premier League, but it remains a truly community organisation at heart. ‘As anyone who watches football knows, refereeing is by no means an easy job, and it is important to encourage more young people to take on the role.

‘The store first supported the society in 2001, and I am delighted to kick start our new sponsorship with this donation.’

Lewiss Edwards, chairman of the Aberdare Referees Society, said: ‘On behalf of the society I would like to thank Neil and his team in Specsavers Aberdare for their ongoing support for local referees, without which we would just not be able to continue so successfully.'
