Have you ever been in a social gathering and missed the punchline of the joke while everyone else falls about laughing? Or maybe you become stressed in busy social environments because you find it difficult to follow conversations?

It’s not much fun to feel like you are missing out, but it’s important to address the issue and seek help, as it could be a sign that you are suffering from hearing loss.

Help is at hand

Thankfully, Specsavers Hearing Centres can offer a helping hand from friendly and supportive audiologists in store. It’s also important to remember that hearing loss is a common problem which affects one in six people in the UK*.

Free hearing tests in store

If you suspect that you may have hearing loss, why not pop into your local Specsavers Hearing Centre for a free hearing test with a fully-qualified professional audiologist?

Depending on your level of hearing loss, a full-hour hearing test or three-minute check-up are both offered in store for free.

Advice from Colin

Colin Campbell, audiologist and director of professional services at Specsavers Hearing Centres, is encouraging anyone over the age of 55 to have their hearing checked as part of their regular healthcare routine.

He said: ‘Many people struggle to admit that they are suffering from hearing loss, and some don’t even realise that there is an issue until they have been treated. We recommend that anyone over the age of 55 has a hearing test every year.

We also consider aftercare to be just as much a part of dealing with hearing loss as coming to terms with the issue itself. That’s why we teach you how to use and clean your aids as well as offering a four-year guarantee and free batteries whenever you need them, to support you long after you leave the store.’

Tell-tale signs

Here are some signs which may suggest someone you know is experiencing hearing loss:

- You regularly ask people to repeat things that you’ve said

- You listen to the TV at full blast or find it difficult to follow dialogue at the cinema

- You find it difficult to follow conversation in busy social situations such as parties and restaurants

- Telephone conversations are a struggle
