Specsavers in Chard is hosting a collection drive for old and unused glasses in aid of Vision Aid Overseas (VAO) throughout July and August.
Store director, Stephen Watson said: ‘We have a donation bin taking pride of place in store and our goal is to reach over 500 pairs of glasses by August. We have invited local business owners, sportsmen, community groups and council members to come down and donate their old specs too.
‘At the end of the day the collected specs are boxed and donated to VAO for recycling. The charity uses the money it makes from selling the reusable materials to fund its work in developing countries.'
More about Specsavers and VAO
Since 2003, Specsavers has donated £800,000 to VAO meaning 85,000 people have been able to receive eyecare in Zambia. On top of this vision centres have been opened in eight Zambian provinces and the donation has helped to open the country’s first optometry training centre which was officially opened by Specsavers founder Dame Mary Perkins.
