Specsavers in Derby has invested in revolutionary diagnostic equipment which could help to save the sight of local residents.

New Technology

Customers of all ages, at the recently expanded store, can benefit from its advanced eye scanning system, to help detect a number of eye conditions such as; glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and diabetic retinopathy. What’s more, the store offers this service as part of the eye test at no extra cost.

The Topcon 3D Optical Coherence Tomography system (OCT) is similar to ultrasound, but uses light instead of sound waves to penetrate a medium and creates a picture from the wave reflections – in this case, the back of the eye. The 3D scan will illustrate the different layers that make up the optic nerve and retina, and can be cross referenced with a digital photograph of the surface of the eye to pinpoint areas of concern.

Store director Raj Gohil says: ‘The sophisticated technology we now have available has greatly enhanced the standard of eyecare we provide. We have two OCT systems in store and use them to create a three dimensional picture beneath the surface of the regular retinal image, allowing our opticians to easily diagnose, manage and refer customers to a specialist for further treatment, should it be required.

Benefits for customers

‘At Specsavers, we pride ourselves on offering the highest standards of eyecare, our latest investment in the store proves this and at around £50,000 each, our 3D OCT systems are the single biggest investment we have ever made in ophthalmic equipment. Things were very different when we opened the store 25 years ago, the technology we now have access to is incredible and brings many benefits for our customers.’

3D OCT scans are usually only available in hospitals, so the convenience of having the state-of-the-art technology at Specsavers in Derby is hugely beneficial to people in the town and surrounding area. ‘We used to have to refer customers to hospitals or specialist eye units for an OCT scan,’ says Mr Gohil. ‘So it’s great to be able to offer the service in store – hopefully cutting down the time customers may have to wait elsewhere.’
