A ‘denim for dogs’ fundraising day has raised more than £130 for Guide Dogs Scotland.

The event, held at Specsavers in Arbroath, featured special canine guests, a three-month-old German shepherd puppy named Orla and three-year-old guide dog Layla, as well as two representatives from the charity - June Ainsworth and Jim Christie.

‘It costs around £50,000 to train and support each guide dog throughout its working life, and this is supported entirely by public generosity,’ explained Guide Dogs Scotland community fundraiser, Andrea Williams.

‘The kind support of staff in Arbroath will help us make a life-changing difference to someone with sight loss.

‘Specsavers is a tremendous supporter of Guide Dogs, with the local store in particular giving us exceptional backing, and we’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone who got involved in the ‘denim for dogs’ event.’

Donning denim for Guide Dogs

Staff made a donation in exchange for being permitted to dress in denim for the day, to help raise awareness of the fantastic work the charity carries out. Customers also had the chance to enter a ‘name the famous dog’ raffle and staff were on hand to offer dog-themed face painting to local children.

‘All our staff enjoyed a fantastic awareness day in aid of a really worthy charity,’ explained dispensing consultant Natasha Lamb.

‘Our puppy visitors definitely went down a treat with staff and customers. It was great to see first-hand how these intelligent creatures can be such a vital support to those with a visual impairment.’

Guide Dogs Scotland provides blind or partially sighted people with a guide dog to help greatly improve their quality of life. Money raised for the charity not only helps to train future guide dogs, but also allows the charity to work closely with the new owners and provides them with all the essential items they will need and financial assistance to cover food and veterinary bills.
