With hearing loss often dismissed as a rite of passage when getting older, a new international study published in The Lancet says that mid-life hearing loss tops nine risk factors that contribute to the risk of dementia.
Act now, not when too late
Specsavers Newtownards, where all staff have completed Dementia Friendly training, is encouraging middle age customers to look after their hearing and get regular hearing checks and tests if needed.
Joanne Torrens, Specsavers Hearcare Director in Northern Ireland explains: ‘The international study quite rightly highlights the importance of looking after your hearing in middle age – not when it is too late and the damage has already been done. ‘If people take good care of their hearing, the risk of dementia can be significantly reduced, and that simply means getting regular hearing tests.’
3-minute, free hearing check
Specsavers offers a 3-minute hearing check with no appointment necessary. The customer is then advised, from these checks, whether a full hearing test is necessary. These are by appointment only and take about one hour. Both checks and tests are free.
