A woman from Ayrshire was chosen from thousands of proud glasses wearers as a finalist for Specsavers’ Spectacle Wearer of the Year.

Danielle Drysdale-Craig, aged 29 from Girvan was in with a chance to join the ranks of previous winners and take home £10,000 as well the chance to mingle with the stars at the annual Spectacle Wearer of the Year Awards.

Glasses wearers across the UK and Republic of Ireland have been showing off their specs style by sharing their selfies online throughout the spring and summer.

Prize galore

Danielle was invited to visit her local Specsavers store in Ayr to receive a bottle of champagne, a certificate and a £129 glasses voucher.

Upon hearing that she’d been chosen as a regional finalist, Danielle said: ‘I honestly didn’t believe it at first. I entered the competition just for fun - I never expected to get this far!

‘I’ve worn glasses since I was four years old, and because of my sight consistently deteriorating over the years, they’ve always been a part of my life. At first, it was a challenge as I felt very self-conscious about wearing them and even considered contact lenses or laser surgery, but after a while, I really learned to love my glasses.

Staying stylish

‘I’ve learned accessorising and finding a pair that suits you makes all the difference. Most importantly, it’s just something that sometimes you need to do so being proud to wear glasses should come naturally. Even now that I’m a mum, if my little one ever gets to a point where she needs glasses, I’d teach her to be proud and to look great, just like her mum!’

Linda Fulton, store director for Specsavers in Ayr, said: ‘As soon as we heard that Danielle had been selected as a regional finalist for the Spectacle Wearer of the Year competition, we were over the moon.

‘She’s a credit to the glasses wearers of Ayr and everyone in store will be rooting for her should she reach the final stages of the competition.’

Rubbing shoulders with the stars

The awards were launched by Strictly Come Dancing star and TV personality Oti Mabuse earlier this year. If she triumphs in her category, Danielle will meet Oti and rub shoulder with many other celebs at the glitzy awards ceremony at London's 8 Northumberland Avenue in October.

There are eight categories, including a social media winner voted for by the public. All category winners will win a VIP makeover, with one overall winner taking home the ultimate accolade in specs wearing.
