Cookstown woman crowned overall Spirit of NI winner

Local lady Carol Doey was crowned as the overall winner at the 2014 Sunday Life Spirit of Northern Ireland Awards with Specsavers.

Other winners on the night include:

  • Six year old Rose Doherty, from Garvagh, who picked up U105 young person’s award
  • Seanin Smith, from Belleek who won the Specsavers overcoming adversity award
  • Brian McDonagh, from Omagh man, who won the Sunday Life Unsung Hero award

Great night

More than 300 people attended the Spirit of Northern Ireland Awards including the 15 finalists and their families who were thrilled to meet the celebrities and pose for pictures with a gallery of TV stars and sporting legends at the Culloden Hotel.

Soap and drama fans had their pick of household names from the likes of Emmerdale, Coronation Street, Holby City, Game of Thrones and The Fall.

The evening was rounded off by a top performance from 2013 The Voice winner Andrea Begley.

Highlight of the year

Tony McGinn, Regional Chairman for Specsavers, Northern Ireland and one of the judges said of the awards: ‘This is a highlight of the year for us at Specsavers and we’re excited to once again have been involved throughout the whole process, from finding our finalists to the overall winner on the night.

‘This is the fourth year we have been part of the awards and I always enjoy meeting all the finalists and celebrating an evening with some of the most inspirational, heroic and determined people in Northern Ireland, alongside their friends and families.

This year has been no exception.

The 2014 Spirit of Northern Ireland awards was a night not to be missed; it was humbling and heartwarming married with laughter and celebration, and I couldn’t be happier to have been there.’
