A team member at the Larkhall store was pleasantly surprised by her colleagues and family in-store with an in-store celebration, after her university graduation ceremony was cancelled due to the pandemic.
Maxine Mueller, an optical assistant at the store, was due to receive her degree in Optometry from Glasgow Caledonian University in July but unfortunately, the event was cancelled due to COVID-19.
However, store director Jill Keenan decided that Maxine’s hard work needed to be commemorated, so the team organised a surprise in-store graduation ceremony for Maxine, complete with printed degree certificate and graduation robes.
Sights set on a bright career
Maxine has worked with the Larkhall store since it opened back in 2018 and received on-site training in support of her degree, dispensing lenses for customers and assisting with clinical tests. Now that she has received her degree, she will be able to progress in her career becoming a pre-reg optometrist at the store.
A pleasant surprise
Following the surprise, Maxine said: ‘It was such a lovely surprise when my family arrived at the store, I was very emotional about the whole thing – I didn’t expect a thing!’
‘Specsavers Larkhall is a fantastic place to work and I’m looking forward to starting my pre-reg year in the Autumn, taking another step in this amazing career. I’m lucky to have the support from the team and the two store directors, Jill and Steven.’
‘Celebrating in our own special way’
Jill Keenan, store director at Specsavers Larkhall, said: ‘Maxine has been with the team now since her second year of university and we’ve seen her grow throughout her studies into an exceptional member of the team.
‘When we heard that her graduation had be cancelled, we knew that we had to celebrate her achievements in our own special way so planned this surprise celebration as a thank you to her commitment and hard work. Maxine is certainly set to have a bright career in this industry.’
