Members of staff at Specsavers in Burton think of other over the festive season

Members of staff at Specsavers in Burton-on-Trent are spreading some goodwill this Christmas, joining with the Burton Mail and a variety of other businesses to help local people in need over the festive period.

The team at Specsavers Burton has set up a display in store for the ‘Feed Our Families’ campaign, encouraging customers and passers-by to donate food to help struggling families put food on the table this Christmas.

Helping those in need

Dispensing supervisor Sam Wheeler comments: ‘This is a time of year when people often think about those who are less fortunate than themselves, so we’re hoping that people in the local area really get behind this campaign. We have three big boxes to fill and I’m confident we can do it!’

The campaign is now in its third year, with more than 10,000 food items collected in 2015. All donations will go to either the Burton YMCA or South Derbyshire Council for Voluntary Services who will distribute them to the people who need them most.

But the charitable giving does not stop there.

Encouraged by clinical assistant Pauline Hussey, staff are also donating a variety of food and clothing items to the Burton Soup Kitchen this year as a Christmas card alternative.

Run by volunteers, the Soup Kitchen provides food, toiletries, warm clothing and guidance to homeless, isolated and vulnerable people in Burton-on-Trent.
