Samuel Burns, manager of Newtownabbey opticians has set his sights high in the hope of raising £10,000 for the well-known charity, Friends of the Cancer Centre.
Samuel is set to climb Kilimanjaro in Tanzania starting on 14 September 2014, along with his brother, David. In order to try and reach his £10,000 target, Samuel will undertake a number of fundraising initiatives over the next twelve months, the first of which is being held in store.
Since the end of September this year, and right up until Christmas 2013, Samuel will be stationed at the front of the store cleaning glasses for all customers at a charge of £1 per pair of glasses cleaned. All proceeds will go towards the overall fundraising total.
Mum battling cancer
Samuel says: ‘My mum is currently battling cancer and it has been very tough on all of the family. I know that I speak for everyone who has suffered from cancer or knows someone who has suffered from cancer, that organisations such as the Friends of the Cancer Centre are always in need of vital funds.
‘We would like to ask the local community to dig deep and help us raise as much money as possible.
‘Friends' is the leading local cancer charity based at the heart of the Cancer Centre at Belfast City Hospital. The charity relies entirely on voluntary donations and, with help and support, makes a real and meaningful difference for thousands of cancer patients and their families across Northern Ireland.
How you can help
To help Samuel reach his £10,000 target, you can call into the Specsavers store in the Abbeycentre any Saturday between now and Christmas and have your glasses cleaned for £1.
Alternatively, you can simply donate unwanted pennies or pounds into the Friends of the Cancer Centre collection buckets which will be available in store all of 2014. All proceeds will be donated to the charity upon completion of the climb in September 2014.
