A new Specsavers store is opening in McArthurGlen following a £250,000 investment.
The opticians, opening at Sainsbury’s on 24 February, will provide state-of-the-art facilities for customers and has created six new jobs.
Ann Simpkin, Paul Morris and Stuart Buckmaster, who own and run the Specsavers store on Adare Street, in the centre of Bridgend, will co-own the new store. They will be joined by 27-year-old Omair Khan, who has worked for Specsavers since qualifying as an optometrist in 2015.
Mr Khan is taking on directorship of the new store after completing Pathway – Specsavers’ recruitment programme that tests and trains individuals to see if they have the necessary skills to become a store partner.
Commenting on its opening, he says: ‘I have family in Bridgend and practically grew up here, so co-owning this store is a career milestone for me.
‘I’m passionate about eye health and want us to be the go-to place if you have any issues with your eyes, which I hope will ease the pressure on local GP surgeries.
‘The only ever job I had that wasn’t in optics was at Sainsbury’s, which I loved. Both brands have the customer at the heart of everything they do, so I feel fortunate to be a director of a business that involves both businesses.’
Meeting growing demand
The quarter of a million-pound investment sees the store offer three test rooms, two optical and one soundproofed for audiology services, as well as a hospital-grade optical coherence tomography (OCT) machine. This equipment provides a more detailed scan of the eye than a regular eye test, which can detect eye conditions such as glaucoma and age-related macular degeneration (AMD) up to four years sooner, and speeds up access to hospital treatment.
Stuart Buckmaster, who has been a director at the Specsavers store on Adare Street for three years, says: ‘I’m proud to be part of the team bringing the first Specsavers store to a Sainsbury’s in Wales; we join an already-established network of more than 50 stores operating in the supermarket across the UK.
‘We were starting to reach capacity in our Adare Street store so we saw this as a great opportunity to ensure we could meet the growing demand of our services for our customers. This collaboration will allow us to offer our high quality optical and audiology services to more customers, and do so in the attractive and convenient setting of a Sainsbury’s supermarket.’
