Sadie Webster, a 68 year old woman from Bierley in Bradford, cannot believe her luck! She has been announced a regional finalist in the search for Specsavers Spectacle Wearer of the Year 2016.
Sadie has beaten hundreds of applicants in the Yorkshire region’s 60+ age category. To mark such a great achievement, Sadie was invited to the Darley Street store in Bradford to meet the team and collect her Specsavers vouchers worth £150 and a bottle of champagne.
The accolade of a regional finalist comes with the opportunity to potentially be crowned the overall Spectacle Wearer of the Year, win an amazing £10,000 cash prize and enjoy herself on a luxury holiday for two to New York.
Sadie said that being selected for the second year running is a prize in itself. She added: ‘This is such a lovely surprise for me. This is the second year I have been selected as a finalist so I cannot tell you how much it meant to receive the call that I was a regional finalist, again. It took about a week for the news to sink in!’
Sadie recalled her early years when she wore glasses. ‘I have been wearing glasses for about 20 years now. I started with reading glasses and was constantly taking them off and on and putting them in my pocket as I felt self-conscious. I’ve learnt to embrace them and have over six pairs in circulation at the moment because I love deciding which ones to wear based on my outfit. Everywhere I go, people comment on how fabulous my glasses look!’
Sadie’s words resonate strongly with the organisers of Spectacle Wearer of the Year as the competition aims to celebrate wearing glasses with pride and every entry raises £1 for UK anti-bullying children’s charity Kidscape.
Five age categories
Now in its 21st year, the competition celebrates those who wear glasses across a broad age range: it features five age categories of 16-24; 25-34; 35-44; 45-59 and 60+. Social media fans also get the opportunity to vote for a Facebook favourite too.
Store director Pete Rooke said: ‘We’re all so proud of Sadie and we’re absolutely thrilled to see her reach the semi-final again. She’s such a glam lady and a true glasses champion. Everyone in-store is behind her all the way!’
Sadie had the last word on her win: ‘Everyone has been so supportive. I really didn’t think I would get through this year because there are so many amazing specs wearers out there, I’m thrilled to be a finalist again and my fingers are crossed.’
If Sadie triumphs in her age category of 60+ years, she could meet former pussycat doll, Kimberly Wyatt at the celeb-packed awards ceremony at London’s 8 Northumberland Avenue on 11 October.
