Optician climbs high for charity

24 July, 2014

Two motivated members of staff in Specsavers Bootle have raised £2,500 for charity by completing sponsored walks in some of the north-west’s most picturesque places.

The two dedicated strollers are lab manager Dean Meah and store trainer Heather McClinton.

Heather took on Moel Famau, the highest hill within the Clwydian Range in north Wales and was joined by other fundraising ramblers, which included her auntie.Together they managed to raise £500 for Across, the charity that takes terminally ill people to Lourdes in the south of France.

Across is a charity close to Heather’s heart, and she became a supporter of its good work after her close family friend became ill and wanted to go on one of its pilgrimages to experience the peace and comfort they offer the terminally ill.

Heather said: ‘Across does amazing work and they really looked after a friend who was close to my family and terminally ill. Taking her to Lourdes really boosted her spirits and I was just so pleased that I was able to play a part in helping her and others like her to take part in the pilgrimage.’

£2500 raised with help from specsavers staff

Dean Meah walked the Wirral peninsula to raise cash for his chosen charity. The 25-mile walk took him along the Wirral’s beautiful coastline, and through sponsorship, which included donations from his colleagues at Specsavers, he was able to raise £2500 for Bliss, a charity that provides vital support and care to premature babies in the UK.

Dean said: ‘When my friend’s baby was born prematurely, Bliss were amazing and offered so much support. I don’t think they could’ve got through it without them. It just made me realise that I wouldn’t want anyone to go through such a traumatic experience without support from Bliss. So I decided to do my bit and raise some cash for them.’

Sara Tayor, store director at Specsavers in Bootle said: ‘We are really proud of Heather and Dean completing their walks for charity and all of the fundraising they did in store ahead of their walks. All of the staff knew both charities were close to their hearts and they dug deep to support them, I’m really impressed with how much they raised!’
