Bicester putting apprenticeships in the spotlight

Specsavers Bicester is sponsoring the inaugural Oxfordshire Apprenticeship Awards 2017.

The store is committed to supporting the development of young people through its own optical apprenticeship scheme.

Apprenticeship scheme benefits

'Our scheme is an excellent opportunity for young learners to enter the world of work in a safe and structured way,' said store director, Satnam Johal. 'It also provides them with a real job, great training and meaningful qualifications. Rather than having to pay tuition fees, our apprentices earn a wage and receive additional benefits including paid holiday.'

Apprentices primarily learn on the job, working in-store alongside eyecare professionals. They become a key member of the store team, welcoming customers, giving them advice, booking in eye tests, carrying out pre-screening and dispensing of spectacles and helping the store to run as smoothly as possible.

Alongside this they complete the Level 2 Diploma in Optical Retail, which includes six weekly assessor visits, observations and online learning and courses. 

Platinum Employer accreditation 

The store has recently gained Specsavers’ Platinum Employer accreditation.

The standard means the store meets the standards that provide a great experience for the whole team. It helps improve engagement through leaders actively managing the development and careers of their people as well as delivering enhanced commercial performance through enabling staff to be at their best.

Excellence Awards 

The team is also celebrating after being presented with the Excellence in Overall Performance Award at the 2016 Specsavers Awards. They were honoured with the prestigious award for their ongoing commitment to providing excellence in every aspect of their business, including customer service. The store knows what it's like to have an award winning Apprentice too - Retail Optical Apprentice Harvey Marshall recently won an award for exceptional customer service.

Satnam was thrilled with the accolade: 'It was fantastic to even be shortlisted, so to win and share it with the team is very humbling. We strive day in day out for excellence across every element of operations and to see the store take home this award for the UK and Republic of Ireland was a great way to finish 2016.'
