Bermondsey finalist has the ‘specs factor’
A Bermondsey woman has been chosen out of hundreds of people across the South East as a regional finalist for Specsavers’ Spectacle Wearer of the Year.
Mix with the stars
Denica Alleyne aged 29 from Bermondsey could win £10,000 and a luxury holiday in the Bahamas if she wins, as well as a chance to mingle with the stars at the 20th annual Spectacle Wearer of the Year Awards.
Glasses wearers have been showing off their specs style by sharing their selfies online and entering in stores across the UK and Republic of Ireland.
Denica was invited to visit Specsavers in Tottenham Court Road, near to where she works as at a project management agency, to receive a bottle of champagne, a certificate and a £150 glasses voucher.
Wear with confidence
Mother-of-one Denica says: ‘I remember my very first pair of glasses which were free on the NHS. They made me look like Deirdre Barlow and I used to hate wearing them. Nowadays though I think people really embrace wearing glasses – even those that don’t have sight problems. I feel really proud and confident wearing mine, and I hope that I can continue on in the competition to wave the flag for glasses wearers across the country.’
Mo El-Turki, store director at Specsavers in Tottenham Court Road, says: ‘We’re so pleased that Denica has made it so far in the competition. She is a great ambassador for Specsavers and glasses wearers and we wish her all the best for the next stage of the competition.’
The awards were launched by Spice Girls singer and Heart FM DJ Emma Bunton earlier this year. If she triumphs in her age category, Denica could meet Emma at the celeb-packed awards ceremony at London’s 8 Northumberland Avenue on Tuesday 6 October.
There are five age categories – 16-24; 25-34; 35-44; 45-59 and 60+, plus a Facebook favourite voted for by the public. All age category winners will win a VIP makeover, with one overall winner taking home the ultimate accolade in specs wearing. The ultimate Spectacle Wearer of the Year winner will receive £10,000, plus a week’s holiday for two in the Bahamas courtesy of Atlantis Paradise Island and a wardrobe of specs to suit every style.
