B&B owner is semi-finalist in specs wearing competition
B&B owner, Sandra Graham, from Newquay is celebrating after moving one step closer to winning a £10,000 cash prize in the Specsavers’ annual search for the Spectacle Wearer of the Year.
South West 60+ age category
The 60-year-old from Newquay has qualified as a regional finalist in the South West 60+ age category. She attended a prize giving at Specsavers Newquay where she was awarded a certificate, bottle of champagne and £150 eyewear voucher.
Sandra explained why getting this far in the competition has boosted her confidence: ‘Several of my friends have experienced cancer and so I decided to help raise money for MacMillan Cancer Support and shaved my head. I raised £500 which was fantastic but my dark hair grew back grey.
‘When the advert for the Specsavers competition popped up on my Facebook feed I thought I’d give it a go but did not expect to get the call to say I had been selected. My grey hair must suit me more than I think!
Sandra has been wearing glasses for 10 years and also uses contact lenses. She added: ‘Not many people get to their fifties and don’t need glasses. I think my eye sight started to change in my forties but it didn’t bother me.
‘If I win the cash prize it will be go towards our four children and seven grandchildren so they would all get a share. I have said to the eldest granddaughter that I will take her to Disney’.
A word of congratulations
Newquay Specsavers store director, Steve Morris, said: ‘Congratulations to Sandra. She looks fantastic in her specs and is an incredible woman shaving her head for charity. We’re all rooting for a Newquay local to get to London for the awards final.’
