Amina Abonde-Adigun, finalist for Specsavers' Spectacle Wearer of the Year

An ex-Highworth Grammar School pupil has secured a spot as a finalist out of thousands of people in the national Spectacle Wearer of the Year competition.

Nigerian proverb

Paediatric audiologist Amina Abonde-Adigun, from Ashford, won the 16-24 age category in Specsavers’ annual competition. She will be treated to a styling session and personal shopping trip in London ahead of attending the national final where she will vie for the overall title with a massive prize of £10,000 and a luxury holiday in the Bahamas.

Amina, 24, grew up in Ashford and was born short-sighted with squints but her mother didn’t allow her to wear glasses until she went to school. This was because she believed in an ancient Nigerian proverb which said children’s eyes would shrink if they wore glasses.

Finding the perfect pair

Amina remembers feeling a little uncomfortable wearing glasses when she was younger, but after some encouragement from friends and after finding the perfect pair to suit her face she became more confident. It was this new-found confidence that spurred her on to enter the competition.

Amina says: ‘It definitely helps your confidence feeling good in the glasses you wear. I advise to wear something that suits your face, just as you dress to suit your shape and don’t be afraid to be bold.’

Ultimate prize

Store director of Specsavers in Ashford, Clive Perry says: ‘We’re so happy that Amina has got through to the final of Spectacle Wearer of the Year. We wish her the best of luck and have our fingers crossed for her to win the ultimate prize!’

Having won her category means Amina will now meet Girls Aloud singer and West End star Kimberley Walsh, who launched the awards earlier this year and is due to perform at the final. The awards event will take place at London’s 8 Northumberland Avenue on Tuesday 7 October. All age category winners will have a VIP makeover, and one overall winner will take home the most prestigious title in specs wearing at the grand finale.

Luxury holiday and cash prize

The winner of The Spectacle Wearer of the Year will receive £10,000, a week’s holiday for two in the Bahamas courtesy of the Grand Lucayan Beach & Golf Resort, plus a range of specs ready to team up with all sorts of outfits.
