Ashanti charity gets fundraising boost
Specsavers in Hinckley has added more than £1,700 to its growing charity total following an Indian feast organised by members of staff.
The team were joined by 69 guests for a night of delicious food and entertainment at Leicester’s Chef & Spice restaurant. Along with a three-course meal, attendees were also able to get their hands on a selection of raffle and auction prizes for a donation to the Ashanti Development charity.
The team hopes to raise £12,000 to build a community centre and clinic for villagers in the Ashanti region of Ghana, which will improve healthcare services.
Store director Abhijit Roy commented: ‘I’d like to say a huge thank you to my colleagues at Specsavers in Leicester and Wigston, and to everyone else who attended the meal and made it such a successful evening. Not only were we able to enjoy some fantastic food and company, but we boosted our fundraising total by more than £1,700.’
Much needed healthcare
Abhijit has been involved with the Ashanti Development Charity for seven years, and has visited Ghana on a number of occasions to help provide much needed healthcare to people in the Ashanti region.
‘The work the Ashanti Development Charity is doing is really changing lives, but more can still be done,’ Abhijit explained. ‘During my visit to the region last year, it was clear that the development was in need of a new clinic and community centre to serve the increasing number of people seeking help, so we have pledged to raise £12,000 to cover the cost.
‘Our fundraising will continue with skittles and quiz nights later in the year, and we’re always welcoming donations so anyone wishing to make a contribution can do so in store or online. We’re delighted with the response from our local community so far this year, and look forward to seeing this continue in the months to come.’
Established in 2005, the Ashanti Development Charity was set up by Ghanaians living in London, who wanted to improve the lives of people in their home villages. To find out more, visit: http://ashantidevelopment.org/.
