Exmouth apprentices Harry and Lucy are celebrating as they qualify and continue a fulfilling career in optics – and they’re urging other young people to follow their lead as an apprentice. This month has seen National Apprenticeship Week, with a wide range of Exmouth organisations announcing opportunities for local young people.

Nineteen-year-old Harry recently completed his apprenticeship at the Exmouth Specsavers store, where he is continuing to work as a lab technician.

He said: ‘Apprenticeships are a great way for young people to find a profession that suits them. The Specsavers apprentice scheme is great – it really tests you to the fullest. ‘There is a lot of variety within the store, and I'm always doing and learning something different. ‘I enjoy working with my team and can’t thank them enough for all the all the support they have given me.’

Lucy Brieley, aged 20 began her Specsavers optical apprenticeship in October 2018 and completed it in November 2019. She said: ‘I have really enjoyed my training here at Exmouth Specsavers. There is a huge amount of variety and it’s an absolute pleasure to help people and interact with the public on a daily basis, no day is ever the same.’

Ria Heskins, Exmouth Specsavers store director, said: ‘We have had huge success with Harry and Lucy and it’s a pleasure to work with them and see them grow in confidence and gain new skills. We are advocates of ‘growing our own’ and the apprenticeship scheme has now welcomed Chloe, marking the first step in developing individual skills and securing her future within the optical profession.'
