Specsavers Allerton Store Director reveals all in Q&A
Married dad of three, and Specsavers Allerton Store Director, Andrew Preston, reveals his love of football and skiing and admits to being the only optician he knows who doesn’t need glasses.
An education in eyecare
After gaining his first degree in Orthoptics from the University of Liverpool, Andrew spent time working at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital before returning to study optometry at the University of Bradford where he met his wife, also an optometrist. After undertaking his pre-reg training at Specsavers in Huyton and then working for two years at an independent opticians in St. Helens, Andrew was invited back to Specsavers to open the Allerton store, an opportunity he relished: 'growing up in Allerton, I naturally have a real affinity for the neighbourhood, so I jumped at the chance to launch a Specsavers store in the area'.
Almost nine years later, Andrew now boasts two decades in the eyecare industry, half of which has been spent with Specsavers. As store director, Andrew not only uses his invaluable skills in caring for eyes, he also manages all other aspects of store delivery, from sales and operations to community engagement.
A passion for customer service
Undoubtedly, his passion remains with his customers: ‘For me, the best part of my role is interacting with patients and knowing that, together with my excellent team, we’re truly making a difference to our customers‘ everyday lives‘. Alongside his 20 members of staff, Andrew is responsible for ensuring the Specsavers store in Allerton constantly evolves in order to stay at the forefront of innovation in what they do – caring for eyes and ears.
A legacy of supporting young talent
In order to help achieve this, Andrew proudly supports the notion of training young talent, with several of the store’s optometrists starting their careers there as part-time optical assistants while at school. ‘We invest heavily in our employees as we know how valuable they are to the future growth of the Allerton store. It’s great to be a part of that journey,‘ said Andrew.
Andrew is quick to stress the importance of regular eye tests: ‘You can tell a lot from a person’s eyes and given that we can’t replace them, it is critical for us to look after them – they’re the only ones we have! Opticians can detect serious eye conditions at an earlier stage meaning they are more treatable‘. As well as offering the very best in eyecare, customers can now benefit from hearcare at Specsavers Allerton.
