All smiles as Great Yarmouth art student becomes regional finalist
Angelica Urfano, a 20 year old art and design student at Wensum Lodge, is thrilled after being selected as a regional finalist in the search for Specsavers’ Spectacle Wearer of the Year 2016.
"Glasses are my best accessory"
As a fashion conscious student, Angelica says that glasses are one of the main components of her style, co-ordinating every outfit with a pair of specs. She adds: ‘I love my glasses! We’re so lucky to live in a time where they are so much more than a necessity and I can truly embrace them and express my individuality. If someone was to ask me my advice when getting their first pair of glasses it would be that there’s nothing to be scared or nervous of – get excited and get creative!’
When she arrived at the store, Angelica told how she was still in a state of shock and almost giddy with the idea of being crowned the overall Spectacle Wearer of the Year, which would carry a £10,000 cash prize and a luxury holiday for two to New York.
As a student, the prospect of £10,000 could be ‘life changing’ for Angelica. She said: ‘Winning would honestly be a blessing. To no longer have to worry about money and resorting to beans on toast for dinner would take such a weight off of my shoulders.’
But this competition has an even deeper meaning for Angelica if she wins the 2016 title. From a young age she has had a desire to make a change in the world and has volunteered for different causes. However, she now wants to help a community that is very close to her heart - her family in the Philippines. Angelica has never met all of her family because the majority of them are based in her home country. But, if she were to win the cash, her dream would be to visit her Filipino roots and learn about her heritage while volunteering aid to those in need in the community.
Store director, Makhan, awarded Angelica with her prizes, last month. Commenting on her win, he says: ‘This is an amazing start to my first few months in the store, we’re so proud that one of our regular customers and such a great representative for specs wearers everywhere is flying the flag for Great Yarmouth in such a prestigious competition. Angelica is such a lovely girl and always giving to others so she deserves to be rewarded with such a great prize. We’ll be cheering her on all the way to the finals in London and hope to see her crowned Spectacle Wearer of the Year 2016.’
Spectacle Wearer of The Year 2016
Now in its 21st year, the competition celebrates those who wear glasses across a broad age range: it features five age categories of 16-24; 25-34; 35-44; 45-59 and 60+, with every entry raising £1 for UK anti-bullying children’s charity Kidscape. Social media fans also get the opportunity to vote for a Facebook favourite too.
If Angelica succeeds in her age category of 16-24 years, she could meet former pussycat doll, Kimberly Wyatt at the celeb-packed awards ceremony at London’s 8 Northumberland Avenue on 11 October.
