Specsavers Ballymena has come to the rescue of international sailor Megan Watt when disaster struck on the Tall Ship ‘Maybe’.
Megan who comes from Hawaii is one of the crew on the sailing vessel ‘Maybe’ as she navigates the oceans with youth groups on board. Also volunteering on the ship was Ballymena man John McCormick who tells the story.
'Maybe is a tall ship which is constantly at sea either taking part in the Tall Ships race or welcoming young people on board to experience life on board and for self-development purposes. I was volunteering on Maybe and met Megan as we sailed from Portugal to Cork after the ship’s winter refit. During the journey Megan was accidentally hit by a ‘sheet’ which is a rope controlling a sail. Unfortunately, her glasses were smashed as a result.’
No shore leave
‘Obviously far from home in Hawaii and with no shore leave to go looking for an opticians Megan was stuck. As my sailing journey ended in Cork I offered to help her replace the glasses at my own opticians, Specsavers in Ballymena once I got home. Store director, Adrian Murdoch was able to use Megan’s prescription so when she sailed into Belfast a few days later her new glasses were there waiting for her.’
Adrian Murdoch, store director said: ‘When John told us Megan’s story we were delighted to be able to help out and were able to make up a new pair of glasses for her very quickly. John is a great customer and we were very pleased to be able to make a small contribution to the work that he and Megan do as volunteers on the Tall Ships.’
