It's never too late to change your life, according to a Bodmin woman who’s embraced the world of apprenticeships at 47. As Sharon Saving approached the half-century, she was ready to broaden her employment experience – so she leapt at the chance of the optical apprenticeship opportunity at her local Bodmin Specsavers store.

The scheme is open to anyone from the age of 16, including recent school or college-leavers or those looking for a new challenge.

Sharon said: ‘To be honest, at my age I didn't think that I would be considered for an opportunity like this, as I really thought it was for younger people. However, during my interview with store director, she mentioned it as an option – so I decided to accept the challenge. The apprenticeship fitted into my life perfectly because the store staff were fantastic. They supported me throughout, sending me on various courses and allowing me time each week to complete any work necessary for the course. Not only has it sparked my interests in learning again, but I’m now training to be an in-store trainer.’

Sharon’s training lasted for 13 months, and she is now part of the 94% of people across Specsavers who have taken on a full-time role with the organisation after finishing.

Jo Mclean, store director at Specsavers Bodmin, said: ‘Sharon has worked really hard throughout her apprenticeship. It has been an absolute pleasure to see her grow as a person and see her develop as a member of the team. It’s really important to raise awareness and let people know that this scheme is open to all ages over 16. As Sharon has said, it’s never too late to learn new skills. We’re proud to support Bodmin people in working locally and help the local economy. At the end of the day, as long as you’re a hard worker, punctual and ambitious, you will do well at Specsavers, and there is plenty of opportunity to continue with your development.’
