A friendly face at Basingstoke
The team at Basingstoke always puts the customer first and is looking at new ways to extend their professional service.
Supporting Dementia Awareness Week
One way to support the community is to have an increased awareness of different customers' needs. Testament to this is the training offered to staff to improve their empathy and understanding of those living with dementia. Two colleagues are already 'Dementia Friends' - an initiative ran by charity, the Alzheimer's Society - and the directors plan to extend this training to other members very soon.
Why it matters
Dementia Awareness Week runs from 14th May and one element of the campaign is to get businesses onboard with the challenges and requirements of those living with dementia.
Of particular note to an optician and audiologist is the impact dementia has on our senses, particularly hearing and sight. The world can easily be misinterpreted, causing hallucinations in extreme cases.
The training that Specsavers' colleagues receive helps them to navigate around these issues and enable them to provide the best possible care.
A Dementia Friend is easily identified with a badge on their uniform.
