What is enucleation?
Enucleation is the process of surgically removing the eyeball (globe) under general anaesthetic, leaving the eyelids, lashes, brow and surrounding skin intact.
People who have undergone enucleation are given a prosthesis which fills the hole where the eyeball used to be and is made to look exactly like the other eye.
Unfortunately, there's no current way that eyes can be transplanted to replace an entire eye and the prosthesis has no visual capabilities.
