Might my 21 month old have hearing problems?

My son is 21 months and is not talking. I think he may have a problem with his ears. I know he understands me sometimes when I talk to him but he doesn't say anything to me. He used to say some words but that has stopped now. I am concerned there is a problem with his ears. Should I take him to our GP or can he get seen by an ear specialist?

Answer:

Anyone that has concerns over a child's hearing should always contact their GP in the first instance. The GP will then give you the best advice as to whether a referral to a peadiatric ear specialist is required.
