Can I do anything about my fluctuating hearing loss and tinnitus?

I had flu in November last year and since then I'm constantly losing my hearing in my left ear...everything is muffled when talking to people or watching tv. Also the constant ringing is driving me mad. Ive been to an audiologist who stated I needed two hearing aids, one for each ear. Should I ask for a second opinion because my hearing keeps coming and going?

Answer:

If you have fluctuating hearing loss and constant disturbing tinnitus, you should make an appointment with your GP and ask for a referral to see an Ear, Nose and Throat specialist. Whilst hearing aids may provide some long-term benefit, it is important to rule out any medical causes of your hearing difficulties before having aids fitted.
