Free guide for the public sector: DSE regulations and employer responsibility
March 2009Print this story
Specsavers Corporate Eyecare is offering all public sector organisations a free guide to the Health and Safety Display Screen Equipment Regulations.
The 1992 Health and Safety (Display Screen Equipment) Regulations (amended in 2002) require employers to provide all employees who use visual display units (VDUs) with eye tests, when requested, and glasses, if required. Research from Specsavers has shown, however, that a staggering 81% of companies are not complying with the regulations in some way and nearly a fifth do not even have, or do not know, if they have an eyecare policy*.
Experience within the public sector has shown Specsavers that many organisations are still misunderstanding the regulations and their implications.
The free guide aims to explain the details of the sometimes confusing regulations and to clarify to whom they apply and under what circumstances. The guide includes sections on:
- Who is covered
- What the law demands
- Requirements for eye tests
- Provision of glasses
- Associated costs
- Parts of the regulations open to interpretation
