Ask the Optician

Sticky, sore eyes and vision blurred

Question

My eyes always feel sticky sore and vision is blurred when I read a newspaper or look at my phone for any length of time. I also get floaters that look like little particles of dust and my eyes sting. Specsavers prescribed me glasses about year ago but I still have this problem reading or looking at my phone with or without my glasses. Its like I've been swimming in chlorine. My doctor mentioned an allergy but optician mentioned dry eye.

Qualified optometrist Simon Kay BSc(Hons) MCOptom answers this question.

It is probably dry eye, although the floaters are a seperate issue, and nothing to be concerned about. You should try supplementing your tears with lubricating eye drops. There are a variety of different ones that you can buy from the optician or pharmacy. The more advance formulations tend to give greater relief. The other treatment recommended for dry eyes is warm compresses to the closed eye three to four times a day. This helps stimulate the glands under your eyelids to secrete part of your tear film.
